In the portion of Vaera we have the first 7 plagues but there is a major change between 1-5 and those following. In the first group the verse relates that Pharaoh hardens his heart, but by 6 it changes to God hardening Pharaoh’s heart. On the face of it we might conclude that this is an exception to one of the most fundamental principles of the Torah, which would be free will.

Approaches abound as to how to resolve this, but one that speaks to a modern audience would relate to addictive behavior. Pharaoh began with full choice, but his repetitive lying and deceiving built within him a behavior that was harder and harder to withdraw from. Indeed, addictive behavior can easily devolve into a situation when the person has almost no control, but who is to blame for that? Of course we know now that there are cases when a person is born with a strong predilection and therapy, rather than mussar, would be the appropriate approach. However, the Torah is referring to humanity in general, warning us not to get into bad moral habits that without early intervention can overwhelm us.

We bless the new month of Shvat coming up this Monday.
