Many of you know that we recently completed a humanitarian mission to the Jewish community of Havana. One of the highlights was my Torah presentation to them in the Patronato synagogue and this is a partial translation:

In the prayer we add in the Amidah for Chanukah there is a description of the military miracle of Chanukah but omits any mention of the miracle of the oil. This would indicate that the sages put much more emphasis on the first, rather than the second. Indeed, considering how astonishing our victory was at that time, why the need for an additional miracle?

Our sages explain that without the imprimatur of the second miracle, the miraculous nature of the military victory would be in danger of being explained away in natural terms as the years went on. But with the inexplicable miracle of the oil, there could be no question of the Divine hand in all the events leading to the liberation and rededication of the Beit Hamikdash (Temple). We must always be on guard from the temptation of explaining away the Divine blessings of our life lest we develop a sense of entitlement to all the good things with which we are blessed.

This Shabbat is both Parshat Mikeitz and Rosh Chodesh, which extends through Sunday.
