In Parshat Toldot we have a classic disagreement between parents regarding the future of their children. Isaac felt that Esau should be included in the legacy created by his parents while Rebecca didn’t. Was Isaac fooled by his son’s fraudulent behavior and as a mother, was Rebecca more in tune with the true essence of her son?
Putting the best face on a difficult situation the sages conclude that Isaac knew who his son was but felt the role he envisioned for him would address his failings and keep him in the fold, while Rebecca clearly didn’t have that kind of confidence. Ultimately, they conclude that it was Rebecca’s superior prophetic vision that carried the day towards the fateful choice that was made, albeit with much painful consequence both for then and the future.
