Parshat Vayera opens with God appearing to Abraham and then is “interrupted” by 3 wayfarers passing by. Abraham then says “my Master, if I find favor in your eyes, please don’t pass by your servant” which on the surface seems to be his calling out to the wayfarers, but some say this is him asking God to remain while he attends to his “guests”. Based on this, the sages make the astonishing conclusion that the mitzvah of hospitality is greater than being in the Divine Presence (Shechina).

On further reflection, however, it makes perfect sense in the respect that Abraham’s whole path to discovering God was his observing Him as the ultimate Provider for all life in this world. Thus, it wouldn’t be a stretch to assume that God would prefer to have Abraham physically perform God’s work over being His presence.

Congratulations to Zahava Blumenthal and Colin Kelly for the brit performed on their son Natan Aryeh this morning!
