This week's portion is Re'eh and seems to present us with a choice: behold I have placed before you blessing and curse. However this verse is a great opportunity to see how the Torah can be interpreted on many levels but synthesize to the same idea.

Beyond simply providing a choice between good and evil it also prepares us to the reality that both blessing and curse are present in any life, the challenge is to order one's life such that the blessing will be the main component and the curse a minor one.

And beyond that, in a mystical sense, the reality is that the same force that creates blessing can also create curse. Everyone receives the same divine energy; it's up to us and how we live our lives that determines how that energy is manifested for us.

Sunday and Monday are Rosh Chodesh Elul heralding the end of the year and the last chance to put our spiritual affairs in order before Judgment Day.

The TriBeCa Synagogue extends a hearty Mazel Tov to our longtime member and trustee Paul Schaeffer and his wife Lorena who will be celebrating the Bar Mitzvah of their son Lucas, a product of our TriBeCa Torah Hebrew School. Friday morning they are sponsoring breakfast in honor of his first tefillin at Shacharit and Kiddush this Saturday morning when he will be called to the Torah and read his portion.
