Shabbat ends  8:40pm

This week is the second portion of the book of Deuteronomy (Dvarim) called Vaetchanan, which is the special term for prayer referring to Moses’ request to be allowed to enter the promised land. Rashi explains that the righteous don’t rely on their past merits and ask as a favor, hence this term which means something for free (chinam).

This Shabbat is called Nachamu (be consoled) which begins the multi week haftarot dedicated to consoling the Jewish people in the aftermath of the 3 weeks of mourning that we just completed.

Finally, tonight is the 15th of Av (Tu B’Av) which commemorates numerous events throughout our history beginning with the end of the punishment for the Sin of the Spies but includes many events pertaining to matchmaking. As such this weekend is a popular opportunity for singles events throughout the Jewish community.
