Hebrew School on summer hiatus

Adult Education on hiatus until the end of July

This week the portion is B'haalot'cha containing many scenarios but a subtle one is when the verse reads that "they embarked from Har Hashem on a 3 day journey". The commentators say this reference to Mount Sinai is unique, as it is always referred to as Horeb or Elokim. They go on to explain that this is a subtle reference to their retreating from the experience at Sinai on some level, concerned that they might be getting even more obligations. Rashi even uses the expression " like children running from school".

And it's hard to avoid the comparison to the Jewish calendar in general. Specifically, we have spent the last 10 months closer to the synagogue and Jewish practice, hopefully growing as Jews and people throughout this time. Many of us, however, will now be entering summer mode which generally is far from conducive to this process. Let's do our best to not let our guard down so that when we renew these efforts in the fall we haven't regressed spiritually and can pick right up where we left off!

Congratulations to Judy Tucker and David Fields for the Bar Mitzvah of their son Jasper this Shabbat at the synagogue!
