Adult Education on hiatus

Today is the 33rd day of the counting of the Omer which when you use Hebrew letters for the number you get the word Lag, hence Lag B’Omer. But from there, understanding what the occasion is really about gets much more challenging.

It has a Kabbalistic bent in that it commemorates the yahrtzeit of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai who is the author of the Zohar, the premier work of Jewish mysticism extant. It has a celebratory note in that it marks the end of the plague that decimated the students of Rabbi Akiva. As such people in Israel visit Meron which is where the Rashbi is buried and build huge bonfires as well.

This week the portion is Behar which is a detailed discussion regarding the Sabbatical year and the Jubilee.
