The reading for this week is known as Parshat HaChodesh because we include the discussion of observing the new month along with the Passover Sacrifice. This year it actually falls on Nisan 1 and as such we are required to read from 3 separate scrolls this Saturday morning. All this synagogue ritual calls attention to the enormous emphasis we put on our lunar calendar and our following the cycles of the moon.
One of the reasons we have this intense focus is because the moon represents renewal. Our calendar seems to foreshadow the fact that the fortunes of the Jewish nation would wax and wane throughout history and indeed we enjoyed intense highs and lows in our history. But our uniqueness as a people lies in our ability to come back, even after terrible disasters, and continue our legacy even into this post modern era.
The holiday of Passover is also an occasion of renewal, paralleling the renewal of the spring season in which it falls. This renewal is not so much in the individual sense of the high holidays, but in the national sense, and hopefully also in the family sense. We became a nation in the month of Nisan and we recharge our cultural batteries in this special month.
Next BBYO event TONIGHT at the synagogue at 6:30pm. All available teens strongly urged to attend!
