We reprise in this week's double portion the death of Aaron, but add the calendar date. This happened to be the 1st day of the 5th month, in other words, Rosh Chodesh Av, which begins tonight. Another interesting example of how the parsha so often jibes with the time of year it is read.

A deeper connection could involve what Aaron represented to the historical reality of this season. We are entering the most intense mourning period of the Jewish calendar which starts with Rosh Chodesh and concludes with the Black Fast of the 9th of Av. In a modern context we are told that the roots of our suffering evolved from the break down in the interpersonal relationships of that time but continue to plague us.

It is our tradition that Aaron merited the tremendous honor of the priesthood because of his all consuming pursuit of harmony between human beings. By calling attention to his life's work upon the occasion of his yahrtzeit, there is the hope that we will derive inspiration from his example and commit to emulating his greatness in this area. And if this could happen, the prospects for our ultimate redemption would be just that more likely.

Finally, the sign of the zodiac (mazal) for Av is Ari (lion or leo) which could refer to the personification of that redemption in the form of Meshiach (Messiah), who we are told will come from the house of David whose symbol was indeed a lion!
