This week presents us with one of the most tense and dramatic standoffs in the entire Chumash. Judah and Joseph were confronting each other regarding the fate of their brother Benjamin and ultimately the state of their father Jacob.

The midrash provides a parable to help us understand what eventually carried the day: a well was too deep to be accessed until someone figured out that tying multiple shorter cords made it long enough for the bucket to draw out the water. Joseph's distant heart was like the water that couldn't be reached until Judah sowed together enough small points to melt his heart and he gave in.

But beyond the psychology I believe we have a fine example of leadership on the part of Judah who took the lead, even though he was far from the oldest. No wonder that in next week's portion Jacob grants him eternal nobility.

Our past president, Avi Turkel, will be called to the Torah as a chatan this Shabbat for his aufruf!
