Themes and Concepts

When he is being asked to deceive his father, Jacob expresses his fear of his father’s curse to his mother. Rebecca responds “upon me will be your father’s curse, my son”. This seems to satisfy Jacob and he goes on to pretend to be his brother Esau. The problem is that curses are not transferable and thus Rebecca’s offer was also of no practical import.

The sages explain that Jacob was not interested in however the curse would be manifested. What he needed to know was whether his mother was convinced that her plan was the right course of action. By stating she was willing to take his curse he recognized that she was doing more than trying to manipulate him.

We too should be careful to not blurt out commitments that we haven’t thought through. Our words are precious and we should speak accordingly.
