The mains theme of this week is “machloket” which refers to the kind of conflict that splits communities. Korach’s rebellion against Moses’ authority threw the Israelites into total chaos. But is all debate “traif”? On the contrary, in Ethics of the Fathers it makes clear that there is “kosher” argumentativeness, but specifies that it has to be in the model of Hillel and Shammai.
What’s the difference? The key phrase is L’Shem Shamayim, for the purpose of heaven, which implies an objective search for the truth rather than for an ulterior motive. In the case of Korach the motivation was jealousy as opposed to the lofty rhetoric that he spouted at the time.
