Parshat Behaalotecha has the usual feature of two upside down “nuns” surrounding a short paragraph, which the sages say can be considered a separate book in the Torah. The paragraph happens to be the verses we recite when we take out the Torah: vayehi binsoa ha’aron and includes the request for God to return to the “myriads and thousands of Israel”. The sages derive from this that there is a special level of Divine Presence when our ranks swell to 22,000. And even though it’s such a high number, if the group misses only one individual, that level of Shechina is not achieved. Thus, we have a whole book in the Torah teaches us the invaluable lesson of how even one person can make a tremendous spiritual difference in this world.
