In Mishpatim we have introduced the concept of the loan (halva'ah) which the Shulchan Aruch calls the highest of the 7 levels of charity (tzedakah). The verse reads "if money you will lend to my people" which the commentators qualify by saying "if" actually means "shall". However, he qualifies by stating that we are not simply talking about lending money to buy groceries or the like. He makes it clear that we are talking about a business loan. The goal of which, like any other type of support, must be creating the mechanism for the person to be able to support oneself. It is, of course, commendable to give tzedaka to help someone out of a needy situation of the moment, but it is much better to create a brighter future going forward.

This Shabbat we bless the new month of Adar 1 and the molad is Tuesday, February 1 at 3:07pm and 16 Chalakim.

The women's study group for the Book of Esther was launched last week and will continue this week after kiddush.

Tot Shabbat has been postponed this weekend due to the weather and has been rescheduled for the following weekend (2/5).
