In Parshat Vayigash, Jacob is invited to bring his family down to Egypt by his son Joseph to be able to survive the famine that had enveloped the entire world at that time. In response, Jacob sends Judah in advance, "Lehorot Goshna", which is translated to mean "prepare in Goshen". More specifically, the commentators say that Jacob wanted Judah to create the societal infrastructure that would preserve their Israelite lifestyle. Thus, we see even from ancient times that a Jewish community cannot survive without vibrant institutional underpinnings.
Unfortunately, the pandemic continues to wreak havoc on our Jewish institutions which have for so long served in that capacity. Let us redouble our efforts to support, on all levels, the work we do here at the TriBeCa Synagogue as a bulwark for the preservation of Jewish communal life.
At this point the weather looks appropriate to have this Saturday's kiddush outdoors so let that be an incentive to continue the vibrant attendance we had this last Saturday!
Tuesday is the fast day of the 10th of Tevet which commemorates numerous unfortunate events in our history. Among them was the translation of the Torah into Greek and the death of Ezra.
