Our portion is called Miketz which means "at the end" which is referring to the end of a 2 year period from when Joseph interpreted the butler's dream to the point that Pharaoh had his dream. This was the direct cause of ending Joseph's dark imprisonment and subsequent elevation to becoming viceroy of the most powerful empire in the world. Rabbi Munk notes that this portion is also read at the time of year that night begins to recede and daylight begins to increase in the world.
He goes on to connect all this with the observance of Chanukah when we celebrate light against the darkness, but in a spiritual sense as much as a physical sense. Thus, through Chanukah we connect our history and identity with the cosmos.
Tonight there will be a joint candle lighting on the plaza with JCP at 6:30pm.
Rosh Chodesh Tevet will fall on Saturday and Sunday.
With deep appreciation we acknowledge Nancy Aaronson and Perry Parker for their generosity and vision in creating a gala Shabbat Chanukah. This Saturday, December 4th, we encourage all the community to join us for services, children's programming and a special kiddush! Services and activities will be inside but the kiddush will be outside in a tent generously provided by the Jewish Lawyers Guild.
COVID POLICY: For the safety and comfort of the congregation, we request everyone ages 5 and above must be fully vaccinated to enter the building. All people over the age of 2, while inside the building, must wear a mask covering their mouth and nose, regardless of vaccination status.
