This week presents the largest Torah reading of the year with the gigantic double portion of Matot-Maasei. In the second portion, the Torah reprises the 48 times that the Israelites stopped and started throughout their 40 years in the desert. Our sages propose that the reason camp had to be broken and another journey taken was because there was dissension in the ranks. This was symbolized by the Teruah that was sounded instructing them to break camp which represents inner conflict. It is thus a fitting reading for this sad season which we are told was largely a result of the dissension in our ranks, leading to the destruction of the second temple.

May we take this challenging time in the calendar to focus on improving all areas of our interpersonal relationships. Unity from within is the best bulwark for Divine protection from without.

Friday night and Saturday are Rosh Chodesh Av signalling the deeper mourning period of the 9 days culminating with Tisha B'Av the following Saturday night Sunday.

Please help with minyan attendance!
