In Balak we have one of the most dramatic stories involving a king and a sorcerer, both bent on harming the Israelite nation through the act of cursing. The amazing part is that throughout the entire story it seems that the Israelites were completely unaware of what was happening. Thus, we see the shining example of what it says in Psalms: Behold, never slumbers and never sleeps the Guardian of Israel!

This Sunday we observe the Fast of the 17th of Tamuz which begins the 3 week period of mourning that culminates with the 9th of Av 3 Sundays later. That date is associated with the Sin of the Golden Calf and later with the breach of the wall of Jerusalem, heralding the eventual destruction of the Temple and exile.

This week the kiddush is sponsored by Alan Drexler commemorating the first yahrtzeit of his mother, of blessed memory.

If you missed last week's Beginners Hebrew Reading class try again tonight at 6pm!
