In Behaalotcha we have the unique mitzvah of Pesach Sheni, a second chance of sorts, when a person who couldn't bring the Passover sacrifice at the appointed time could bring one a month later. The question arises, though, that normally we say that a person isn't responsible for accidents. If the person was impure or too far away, the Torah should have simply exempted that person for that year and had them resume the following year.

But the story reveals an important attitude that the Torah is teaching us when it comes to the performance of mitzvot. Those people at that time were complaining as to why they should be left out, rather than simply shrugging their shoulders and saying to themselves too bad. And we should approach our Jewish life with the same feeling.

For the past year we have been cut off from synagogue life firstly because of its closing and then because of our physical vulnerability. The hope is that throughout this whole time we felt deprived, rather than excused. Now that the synagogue is essentially back to normal and most of us are no longer vulnerable, by and large, now is the time to show that we truly appreciate our Jewish communal practice.

Congratulations to our devoted trustee Dolores Wine and her husband Gordon for the upcoming wedding of their son Ezra to Randi Sabbagh this Sunday. They will celebrate his aufruf on Shabbat by sponsoring kiddush in their honor.

The Bnei Mitzvah of Eve and Josh Handfus this past Sunday in our sanctuary.

Special note and opportunity:

We have long sought to partner with NCSY and this weekend offers a wonderful chance to serve the community and get acquainted.
