This week features the double portion of Tazria-Metzora which is dominated by the topic of Tzaraat, which could be considered a spiritual psoriasis. In Exodus and Numbers we have sources that link this condition to Lashon Harah, or disparaging talk without constructive purpose. Included in this presentation is the seemingly fantastical phenomena of this condition potentially affecting one's clothes or even house. Yet the Talmud in Sanhedrin 71a insists that there never actually was a case of these 2 scenarios. So why are they here?

The masters of Mussar describe a frequent example of human nature as refusing to respond to the consequences of one's actions. God is anxious that the person reform and sends "gentle reminders" that there is something wrong, but if those reminders are not effective God continues to send reminders that become less and less gentle. This is the concept that emanates from the Torah describing the increasingly drastic developments of Tzaraat as the person persists in their negative behavior, in this case the gossip and slander. The hope is that eventually the person wakes up to the core problem and acts accordingly.

So in our own lives, this teaches us that if things progress from bad to worse it might be helpful to reflect on our behavior to determine what might have started this process to begin with.

This week we celebrate Israel Independence Day. However, due to the unusual state of affairs with Covid and the calendar, we will celebrate the occasion on Shabbat which is the actual calendar date, 5 Iyar, while others may choose different days.

And speaking of Shabbat, after a long hiatus, we welcome back the Downtown Minyan for Saturday morning services which will be outdoors, and begin at 10am.

We will also celebrate the baby naming for the daughter of Josh and  Lauren Magnas, brother of our longtime member Danny Magnas. They will sponsor dessert.
