Vaera introduces the plagues in particular, and the miraculous in general. Certainly the plagues and miracles had a role in achieving salvation for the Israelites, but there was another equally important component. Bachaya Ibn Pakuda in his seminal philosophical work, Duties of the Heart (חובות הלבבות), calls them "gifts", but not because they might happen to rescue us from a tight situation. Rather, they develop our awareness of the Almighty in this world, and  our clarity of "vision" is often the greatest asset we can be given.

In an age of such cacophonous "information", which constantly bombards our consciousness from all angles, we can certainly appreciate those few times when the Almighty allows us to see the forest through the trees.
