Parshat Ki Tavo begins with the mitzvah of Bikurim, first fruits, which was quite a ceremony when the temple stood. One would gather them, put them in a basket, march to Jerusalem and present them to the Kohen who would wave the basket and the presenter would make a declaration.

Rabbi Ari Enkin makes the observation that the well to do would put their gift in a golden basket which was returned to the owner while the lesser fortunate had their fruits in a wicker basket that the Kohen kept, which seems counterintuitive.

He explains that those with the means to write a check don't demonstrate the level of devotion of someone who has to take the time and effort to create an object for a mitzvah. That is the kind of gesture that the Almighty wants to hold on to.

The TriBeCa Synagogue congratulates Igor Chernomzav and Esther Hammerman for their wedding to take place this weekend.
