In the coming days we feature two "minor" festivals which now seem more significant than usual due to the bigger focus we may have on the calendar, with so much else in our lives being shunted aside.

Tonight and tomorrow is Pesach Sheni, literally the second Passover, that in ancient times was observed in a situation when someone was unable to bring the passover sacrifice at the appointed time. 30 days later that person was supposed to bring the sacrifice to be eaten with matzah and bitter herbs. This is unique in the Torah in offering a "make up" or even a "second chance" and who couldn't use one of those in these troubled times? The custom is to eat matzah on this date so bon appetit!

Monday night and Tuesday is Lag B'Omer, a much more nuanced occasion dealing with multiple factors. Kabbalistically it is known as the yahrtzeit of Shimon Bar Yochai, the author of the Zohar, so we acknowledge his greatness at this time. He was said to be so righteous that his generation never saw a rainbow symbolizing God's displeasure, hence the custom of shooting bows and arrows along with the big bonfires lit throughout Israel. Talmudically, it is noted that the plague decimating Rabbi Akiva's students ended, so the mourning that we have been observing during the period right after Passover comes to an end on this date.

May our plague come to and end as well במהרה בימינו (speedily in our days)!

This week the Parsha is Emor with 2 primary topics: laws primarily about the priesthood and then the holidays and today is the 28th day of the Omer.

Please take advantage of our virtual synagogue being presented throughout the week!
